There are scams out there more clever than I could have dreamed of, and some are so lame and people continue to fall for them so I guess they work.

I have no interest in scamming people, but seeing ideas might be interesting. With how easy it seems to scam some people, maybe just make stuff up.

I believe most scams are not about unique ideas, but just work by identifying and preying on the most weak and naive of our species. Ugly business.
Scamming your way into a bank or a governmental facility to rip them off, on the other hand....
this would have a kind of cool gangster style. If you have sufficient technical hacking and social engineering skills, it shouldn't be to hard to do.
Just pipe dreaming here, of course ....this is too risky business for fragile persons such as myself....

Physical bitcoins are a thing. Here's how they work: You generate a private key and send 1BTC to the corresponding address. Then you mint a physical coin with both the private key and the address on it. You cover the private key with a tamper-evident sticker so the "seal" has to be broken to spend the coins.

In this scam, we will be making and selling physical bitcoins. We can't just store the private key when we make the coin and spend the digital coin because the buyer would be able to see that the address no longer has 1BTC at it. We'll do a different, more interesting scam.

This scam relies on the fact that these coins are collectible items, and by accessing the private key to spend the digital coin, you visibly break the coin's seal. We will assume that most people who buy these coins are collectors who will want to keep the coin intact (in mint condition, as it were), rather than spending the digital bitcoin it represents.

Given the assumption that buyers will not spend the digital bitcoin represented by the physical coin, here's the scam: We mint duplicate coins and ensure we never sell two coins with the same address to the same person. If we sell a coin to Alice for 1BTC (we might even be able to charge a markup since it's a collectible), and we sell a coin to Bob for 1BTC (maybe plus a markup), we've turned 1BTC into 2BTC, possibly with an additional markup! As long as we feel confident that neither Alice nor Bob will spend the digital coin represented by their physical coin, we should not be caught.

And that's my scam idea for how to double-spend bitcoins.

It sounds pretty clever. Would people actually buy physical bitcoins as collectors items? Is that a thing?

Well, something is a thing as soon as people start to believe in the idea, I would say.
In this case real cryptonerds would not fall for this, but what about people with too much money who just like yesterday realized crypto currencies existed ?
You know, like some youtube starlets who think owning bitcoin makes them a 7331 haX0r.
Picking the right victim is essential for any good scam.

They were a thing way back in the day (2011-2013). Look up Casascius coins. Some people "redeem" them (especially higher denomination coins), but there are a lot of people who don't. It looks like overall, only about 28% of minted Casascius coins have ever been redeemed digitally (meaning the other 72% of buyers fall into our target demographic).

It looks like the coin holds digital info. Interesting read about this, I haven't heard of it before.
